The 4-Hour Workweek 1

I’ve read a book ‘The 4-Hour Work Week’ which made a sansation on the net. It was so interesting that I’ll just make a brief note for myself.

The book consists of four chapters called ‘DEAL’ which is acronym for each sections topic, plus prologue. Although there are not many NEW ideas, the contents varies from theoretical to practical and his way of writing is absolutely vivid fun to read.

Prologue,
At first glance of his profile, I just said to myself, “How on earth this guy can manage such things!?”

・Princeton University graduate, and guest lecturer in entrepreneurship
・National Chinese kickboxing champion
・First American in history to hold a Guinness world record
・Applied linguist in Japanese, Chinese, German and Spanish
・MTV break dancer in Taiwan

and so on.. It’s outstandingly crazy. Besides, he is still young. (He was born 1977).
Nevertheless, he used to work more than 80 hours per week in fact, and he’ll going to tell how to archive this funky life in the rest of book.

・1st chapter D for DEFINITION
Let’s re-asses so-called common senses.
“Is being busy good?”, “Is retirement the best goal?”, “Do we need to keep working for 10 years even if it’s so tedious?” According to him, all of the answers should be NO.

・Recognize the difference between absolute income and relative income
・Don’t fear only an action but also inaction.
・Imagine the real worst case, and evaluate the bad case you are afraid about.
・Don’t be busy, be productive
・There is no right timing.

It’s often said though, ‘Change the Rules’, when you change your point of view, you can also change your possibility. Actually, I had thrown many doubts to Japanese common sense and choose eccentric ways. Thus, I couldn’t agree more about the issues which regard to job security and so on. I can do anything anyway, if the topic takes my fancy.

The Second Half

I’ve noticed a significant fact.
The half of 2007 has already gone!
Time flies as always.

Come to think of the past 6 months, actually a lot of things happened but it’s just too quick as lightning.
Moving, a couple of petit trips, oh, I lost my grandma this February as a matter of fact, anyhow, scarcely did I have time I could spend for my personal pursuit of creativity because of the events. I don’t regret those past. Past can’t be got back, no second chances, actually some farewells are absolutely excruciating though. I’ve made up my mind that I’m going to apply myself for the pursuit.

There are some goals that I want to archive until the end of this year.

- Learning PHP5,
I bought a book, PHP 5 for Flash beginning of this year but it’s only the half way through. Besides, a couple of PHP books are piled on my desk. As a person who take priority on versatility, I should be able to manage server side issue including DB. I guess, being able to create a small Expression Engine’s plugin can be a reasonable goal for time being.

- Learning AS3,
Yeah, Adobe CS3 has finally shipped in Japan. I haven’t upgraded yet though, surely I will. Even though the retail price in Japan is clearly ripping off, without those applications, it’s gonna be hard to maintain designing works. A biggest motivation towards CS3 is of course AS3. I was very shocked at the fact that many flash developers have been switching AS3 and creating very inspiring works while I’ve been taking it bit lightly, less urgent, as CS3’s absence. I seriously need to catch them up.

- More English,
I know I shouldn’t spend my time for English too much. In terms of general use, my English should be satisfactory enough. However, there is sadly no ending. I hope I could make use of it as well as my Japanese. Maybe writing this blog and reading books can be a good training.

- More photos,
Where is photographer Satoshi? I don’t take photos much recently. I will find out interesting targets for my photos.

That’s it,
Let’s see it on the end of this year, whether I could archive these goals.
