Neat Image

Brazilian night in the DEEN
Probably, it’s only me that goes to nightclubs, dances with friends, and simultaneously takes photos by DSLR. This photo was taken in a club called The DEEN situated in Perth. A big aperture lens(I have F1.4 50mm) and high ISO setting(D70s allows me to use ISO1600) enables me to shoot photos even in a dark situation. I suppose this is one of the biggest advantage of using this kind of camera. Due to the size of CCD, compact cameras physically can’t resist the noises.

However, there are some noises even in my photos, especially when I look at them as actual pixel size. It was still acceptable though, I tried an interesting software called Neat Image which is quite famous for reducing noises. And actually it works fantastically well! Let me show you how it does the job.

When you see this at this size, it’s bit difficult to contrast the differences. So let’s have a look as a actual pixel size.

Now, you can see the results. Obviously, the photo after reduction is much better than before. Neat Image removes only annoying noises and meanwhile enhances sharpness of edges as well. Actually, it’s not like an instant effect. You need to adjust some parameters. But anyway, if you have a certain knowledge of image editing with computer, you can easily handle it. It’s like a revolutionary function isn’t it? Even Photoshop can’t do like this. Maybe I should’ve tried bit earlier.

Therefore, no sooner did I tried this than I decide to purchase it. Neat Image has five different editions and if you don’t need professional functions you can get cheap one. However, since it works as a Photoshop plugin and 16bit mode, I didn’t have any choice but a top one and I bought it. It costed me about US$75 but actually I was willing to pay for it.

In fact, we can make better use of Neat Image with photos taken by compact cameras rather than the ones by DSLR because of the amount of noises. I used it for my friend’s ones and changed them dramatically. Also, I suppose a combination Neat Image and mobiles’ cameras should be a good idea because mobiles’ cameras always go with a lot of noises.

At the Neat Image’s web site, trial version, which allows you to use almost all functions except for that you save only a jpg format (yes, you can save the result) is available. If you don’t like noisy photos, why don’t you try it out?

virtualPhotographer

Through some blogs, which are about designing, I found an excellent Photoshop plugin.

It’s just awesome!

Seeing is believing, so look at photos on the bottom of this entry. You can modify your photos’ colour like these in a few seconds with this plugin.

As a matter of fact, hardly have I usually used this kind of “instant” effect and what I like is of course tone curve and lighten, darken tools. However, I might change my mind even though they are regarded like “too easy to be creative”. I, in fact, won’t use only this plugin for finishing my work but this might give tremendous inspiration to me spontaneously. Therefore, I’d like to make full use of this one and make some interesting photographs. I wish Filter gallery could use this plugin as well as Photoshop originals.

So far, I can’t organise my photos since I left an external hard disk in which I saved almost all my photos.(What a scatterbrained thing again!) But later on, I’ll try it.

If you’ve got Photoshop or a program, which can use Photoshop plugins, I believe, it’s worth trying.
